Buddhism towards eco-friendly │ Minling Khenchen Rinpoche
In the course of our civilization, we seem to have mismanaged our affairs. We seem to have exploited nature in such a way as to create an imbalance in the natural eco-systems. "With the growth of the very large, heavily populated cities or urban complexes and with town-planners thinking in terms of continuous conurbation extending right across continents, human is tending to forget how profoundly their life is linked with that of nature. We have stripped the hills and valleys of its mantle of green and the rivers which have weakened the earth, are washing away the future into the sea. It is the forest cover that conserves the soil from erosion, regulates the flow of streams and purifies the air we breathe.
Ecology deals with relations of living organisms to their environment, and the present crisis stems from the fact that the natural eco-systems have been disturbed by human.
There are five maim causes of global change, and they are listed below from the most serious one : 1.changes in land and sea use 2.direct exploitation of organisms 3.climate change 4.pollution 5.invasive alien species
Caring for the environment is a natural part of the Buddhist path. The Buddha encouraged us to understand more deeply the underlying unity and interconnectedness of life. Values such as simplicity of lifestyle, sharing with others, taking responsibility for one’s actions, and compassion for all living things have always been at the heart of the tradition. In today’s world, we need to hold to these values ever more strongly. More and more, we are finding it appropriate to identify clearly Buddhist ethics with ecological awareness. This involves conscious choices in the way we lead our lives.
Today, at the turn of another century, we are told that we are passing through perhaps the gravest crisis in human history: the ecological crisis. It is considered ëgraveí because it seems to threaten the very survival of the earth, and invariably, its inhabitants - both man, animals and plants.
So as a Buddhist one is expected to think beyond oneself, interdependence or connectives. Respect other and appreciate all that is given to us by nature freely. What we eat, breath and all materials etc.that we rely on comes from outside. Buddhist life of simple living and thinking says a lot and can solve many problems that we face now and in the future. Serious problems like extinctions of species, environment crises etc. and small problems like our wishes not being fulfilled are due to our making all things completed and not seeing how simple, less greedy we could live our life peacefully and let others live peacefully. But driven by or being pushed by the force of fast growing changes due to so many information or technologies, trying to fit in etc. and main important GREED to have all, being ambitious or vicious mind to conquer etc. is being considered to be talented or get praises for being so, is the result what we now call Global warming, nature disaster, extinction of species etc. whatever name we give. THIS IS WHAT WE HUMEN HAVE CREATED.
If a Buddhist constantly pursues oneself, success, desire and winning over others, Buddhism will lose its original nature. The essence is emptiness, and only when we let go of them will there be compassion.
THE NATURE HAS GIVEN US A LOT BUT WHAT WE ARE GIVING BACK IS A BIG QUESTION THAT WE ALL MUST ASK OURSELVES OFTENLY. IT IS VERY SCARRY IF WE REALLY AND DEEPLY THINK ABOUT IT. So my dear brothers and sisters, we should all wake up and reorganize how we live our lives, what we really really need and how much we do actually need. We have a body, according to that how much is really needed for just sustaining it; we will see not much we need.
We pray that we are able to make wise decisions on our needs and reduce our greed.
If a Buddhist constantly pursues oneself, success, desire and winning over others, Buddhism will lose its original nature. The essence is emptiness, and only when we let go of them will there be compassion.
When our cognition can accommodate sentient beings, we will find inner peace being with the world.
With these changes we will surely be able to bring changes in our environment so that we all can live peacefully along with our bigger families the species.
